"Non relational databases" have seen quite a bit of interest recently. There was a NOSQL meeting in San Francisco last week and they have very kindly put some slides and videos up. I find it interesting but haven't got enough data yet...
I initially thought that by "nosql" you referred to the NoSQL database which has been around since the nineties. Now it turns out than in this context, it refers to "open source, distributed, non relational databases". I should note that "open source, distibuted and non relational" pretty much limits the selection considerably.
I use non-relational databases every day and they seem to be working so far (and have been for about 15 years). Nice and zippy with none of those relationships getting in the way. Unfortunately they're not open source.
I also play with a 'database' that is sort of just the relational bit. Which is a bit mad.
